What does it mean to check in?
Checking in is simply that, taking time to check in! Whether you are working toward a specific goal, maintaining healthy relationships, or simply working to enhace your overall health and wellbeing, taking time to pause and check in with yourself is key to reaching your goals and feeling calm and confident.
When you check in...
it can be a 3 minute pause in your day to see how you’re feeling, reconnect, and set your focus.
it can be scheduled time to reflect on your progress so far, see what’s working well and what needs to shift, and set a plan for your future.
No matter what it means for you, taking time to check in is how to create positive and sustainable growth and healing.
The importance & benefits
Checking in is more than a simple action - it’s a foundational habit for intentional living. When we regularly pause and reflect, we create space to notice what’s working, what’s not, and what needs support.
Checking in helps you realign with your intentions, goals and values. It creates a feedback loop to see if you are still on track for your goals or vision and if it is even still meaningful for you. It helps you reconnect to your “WHY” of it all!
Taking time to check in also allows room for adaptability. Your “why” can stay the same but the “how” may evolve with you.
Checking in decreases the chances of burnout and improves clarity on where you are going. By checking in, you can build greater trust within yourself and within your relationships. That’s where the real work is!
How to do it / what to try
This depends on a few things. It can be a daily pause or a scheduled time in your calendar to take a deep dive. It can be a mindful moment, a reflection, a conversation, or a plan.
Taking a daily check in for just a few minutes allows a moment to create stillness and safety, which is key for a regulated nervous system. You can have a set of questions to turn to or a guided practice. Try my pre-recorded 3 minute check-in on Insight Timer!
If you’re looking for something more geared to goals and habits, having a scheduled time weekly, monthly, and/or quarterly is what will best serve you here. Ask about my guided worksheets and how they could help you!
Try it now! Pause. Mindfully scan through your body. What do you notice? Where needs a bit more acknowledgment? What thoughts and emotions are present? Can you label them? Take 3 long, deep breaths. What does success look like in the rest of your day? What’s your next step?
