Making Your 2024 Goals Intentional & Sustainable

(when the motivation starts to fade post)

Okay…we’re almost in March of 2024 and this may be a tough pill to swallow but simply setting a goal is not enough and you may even be setting yourself up to “fail”. (“Fail” is in quotes because I think failure is complex and should not always be seen as a negative thing - but for the sake of universal understanding, that’s the word we’re sticking with right now). It’s natural to start losing some motivation right around now…it’s still cold, the high energy of the new year is fading, and maybe you're falling back into an old routine or patterns. It’s okay, you’re human!

The good thing is, THIS is the time when building new habits and behaviors matters the most. Take some time to check in. What’s been working well? What’s been challenging? Where do you want to go from here?

According to the Goal-Setting Theory by Edwin Locke, setting goals should be both specific and challenging.

Let’s take some time to walk through one way you can structure your goal(s) so that they are intentional AND sustainable as you work toward them. I encourage you to grab a pen & paper and follow along, answering these questions as we go!

First, what is your goal? What is it that you’d like to achieve? Get specific!

Second, why do you want to achieve this goal? Why is this important to you? This is a great place to also consider where you’re values come into play. What values do you hold and does your goal live in tune with your values?

Third, what’s your motivation for reaching this goal? Your values overlap here, as well. Does your motivation come from an external source (like a doctor’s recommendation, a challenge, a loved one, etc.), or is internal (striving for optimal health, happiness, confidence, etc.)

Fourth, what is your start date? Your end date?

Fifth, how can you reward yourself once you reach your goal?

Sixth, list out any obstacles you can imagine that you may have to overcome.

Seventh, write out any resources and other forms of support that will help you along the way.

Eighth, write out your steps along the way. What are some milestones and larger action steps you will take to reach your goal? What are some small action steps you will take between those larger steps?

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.”

Confucius 551-479 B.C.

Last, but not least, write out some words of motivation that you can post somewhere you will see often. I love using sticky notes and putting them on my bathroom mirror or office desk! Use this along the way to repeat to yourself like a mantra to encourage your forward movement.
